Emilio Botin applies Message Discipline at Banco Santander

I wrote in an earlier post about Message Discipline.  Message Discipline drives operational discipline in an organization.  Simply put, it’s the art and science of translating the business strategy through the organization so that every employee is executing against the business strategy.  That’s not easy to do.  Most businesses make the strategy so dense and convoluted that even senior leaders have a hard time connecting what they do every day to the business strategy (even when it’s beautifully rendered on a PowerPoint deck).

Here’s a great example …of Message Discipline from Emilio Botin, Chairman of Banco Santander.  Over the last 25 years, Botin took the bank from the sixth largest in Spain to the largest in Europe.  In large part, his success is attributed to traditional banking values, and (I think) his ability to put them across in a very clear and compelling way.  This short clip taken from a London conference shows his simple and amusing take on the “operating rules” for the complex business of banking.
